How to Replace your iPod Video's battery

Introduction
Are you a cheap do it yourselfer like me? Did your sweet iPod Video's battery take a crap on your face conveniently a month after your 1 year warranty was up? Don't you fret now! You don't have to send your iPod back to Apple and pay the $60 fee for battery replacement.

Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need
iPod Video with dead/dying battery.
Small flathead screw driver. A small screw driver for glasses works perfectly. (Try Wal-mart's vision center)
Replacement battery (eBay ~$20 or check a search engine, there are sites that sell "battery replacement kits.")
Steps

1
Step One
Insert your screw driver and begin carefully prying the bottom right corner of the iPod Video between the acrylic and metal portions of the device. Use extra caution during this time as the metal screw driver could very well damage the acrylic.

2
Step Two
Now that you have a start it's a good idea to use some sort of plastic probe as a prying lever. (Two plastic pryer's came with my replacement battery.) Work your way up the length of the iPod towards the top.

3
Step Three
Round the corner and finish up the prying process.

4
Step Four
Your iPod should easily separate into two halves now. One side will contain the hard drive and the other will contain the battery.

5
Step Five
Carefully disconnect the battery power wire from the socket on the motherboard. There is a small blue piece of rubber that surrounds the socket for padding and can be taken out to more easily complete this step.

6
Step Six
Gently pry the battery from it's roost, it'll be haphazardly glued in so be gently with it. Pry around all edges of the battery until it comes free.

7
Step Seven
Insert the new battery in it's place and plug in the battery's power wire to the motherboard socket. This is actually a little tricky, I put a little bend in the end of the battery wire to create a small plane for my thumb nail to push it in snug. If you look at the original battery's wire it too will have similar bend in it. Replace the blue rubber piece that surrounds the motherboard socket.

8
Step Eight
Line up the two halves and gently snap them together. You may now charge your new iPod's new battery and feel free to do a small victory jig
by jimbot

Overall Tips & Warnings
*Opening your iPod will void your warranty!
*There is of course a small risk that you will damage the internal components of your iPod if you are not careful.
*If your iPod is still under warranty try your best to get the battery replaced for free!

How to Throw An iPod Wedding

Introduction
Whatever your digital musical interface, you no longer need a DJ at your wedding playing music you don’t want! Now you hold the control to making your wedding a truly individual occasion.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need
iPod (Buy Now)
digital music collection (Buy Now)
venue resources
Steps

1
Step One
Begin Planning: Long before you do anything, you will need to introduce this idea to your potential wife. She will no doubt be doting on things like flowers, seating arrangements, and other boring, albeit necessary, topics. If you tell her in one breath that you will save hundreds of dollars in DJ expenses and get involved in the planning with her, she will undoubtedly love it.

2
Step Two
Find out What Resources Your Venue Has: Once you have selected a venue sight to have the affair at, don’t assume anything. Make sure that your venue has got microphones, speakers, CD players, monitors, and go in and test these items out when you are allowed to tinker around.

3
Step Three
Set the Bar Low: Don’t think that this wedding will be like any other wedding you have ever been to. You are going to need to assign someone to monitor the iPod, stop it at agreed upon spots for things like the Father/Daughter dance and the Mother/Son dance. Once you have programmed the five hours of music don’t think that your job is at all over.

4
Step Four
Mix It Up: You also want to be sure that there is a wide variety of music being played. While you probably don’t want Justin Timberlake and Timbaland Bringing Sexy Back over appetizers, you also don’t want Robert Goulet Dreaming the Impossible Dream smudged in between Britney and Madonna.

5
Step Five
Sans Lights: The one problem with having an iPod wedding is that the DJ typically controls and provides the light packages for dancing and such. If this is going to be a small affair with friends and family, this may not be such a problem. However if you are inviting hundreds of people and you’d rather mask yourself in the fog machine, then an iPod wedding might be something you need to reconsider.

6
Step Six
Improvise: When all else fails, improvise. At my own iPod wedding I didn’t follow my own instructions and was assured that everything would be taken care of, only to emerge thrilled from our nuptial vows to realize that there was nowhere to plug in our iPod at this venue. We had been speaking for weeks and weeks from afar and on the day in question, they looked at me like I had three heads. Never fear, my best man came up with the idea of plugging in a microphone to the speaker on my laptop and everything was fixed. While it then turned into an “iTunes on my Laptop” wedding, it was successful nonetheless.

How to Care for an iPod

Introduction
Care for an iPod is similar to care for any other electronic portable device. Portable music players are delicate and do not respond well to excessive force, temperature extremes and moisture. Once you understand those basics, you will be able to care for any electronic device, including your iPod.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need
iPod (Buy Now)
Steps

1
Step One
Clean the iPod case and plastic shell and keep it looking good. Unplug anything you have connected to your iPod and lock the controls with the “Hold” button. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe away dirt and marks.

2
Step Two
Use the iPod in normal temperature conditions. The iPod is meant to function well in normal conditions, 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Running your iPod or even just storing your iPod in temperatures that exceed this range can permanently damage the device.

3
Step Three
Use gentle pressure to manipulate the controls or make cable connection. The cable connection ports contain many delicate pins, which are easy to bend or break. When a cable will not slide into the connector with gentle pressure, it is either incorrectly aligned or the cable is not suitable for that connector.

4
Step Four
Charge your battery fully to get the best life from the internal battery. The iPod displays several icons on the screen so that you can monitor the charging process. When the device is fully charged, it displays a green battery with a plug icon.

5
Step Five
Heed the “Do Not Disconnect” message. This message tells you that you must eject the iPod before disconnecting it from your computer. Ejecting the iPod takes a few clicks of the mouse and preserves your files from damage.

6
Step Six
Secure the iPod when you plan on biking, jogging or participating in any other physical activity while using the device. Make sure that the lanyard or any other wires can not become tangled or caught on yourself or your surroundings.

How to Repair Your iPod Nano Gen 1

Introduction
Welcome to the iPodRepairSquad.com iPod Nano Gen 1 disassembly manual. These units are small and fragile so please use care when handling your unit.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need
Tools Needed • Soft Tools – used to open the case without scratching. Available at ipodrepairsquad dot com • Small Phillips head screwdriver - #00
Steps

1
Step One
Opening the Case
• Be sure the Hold Switch is turned on. You will see orange when you have the hold in the correct position.
• Using 1 soft tool wedge it into the side of the iPod. It is preferred to stay away from the hold switch and the headphone jack.
• Using a side to side motion, loosen the iPod while gently prying up and down. It can be helpful to insert 2 soft tools at once, using one to hold the gap open and the other to slide.
• There are several clips holding the case in place, so work your way around and pop one side off first, then proceed to the top or bottom and the case should snap right off.

2
Step Two
Dislodging the Battery
• Using a soft tool gently pry up on the battery from the edge shown. It is held on with some adhesive so you may have to work around the side as well.
• Once it is loose you should be able to flip the battery out but be careful because it is still soldered to the logic board.
• If you are replacing the battery you can either use the soldering method or the twisting method. These may be covered in separate manuals in the future. For now leave the battery attached.

3
Step Three
Removing the Logic Board
• There are four screws to remove as shown with the Red arrows in the picture above. These may be covered with tape. Be careful not to strip the screws.

4
Step Four
Free Logic Board From Clips
• Be sure to use a flat screwdriver to loosen the logic board from the 4 clips shown above so you will have more room to work with before you proceed to the next step.

5
Step Five
Removing the ClickWheel Ribbon
• We’ve found the best way is to hold the Nano between your thumb and first two fingers. You won’t have much room to work but it’s enough to get a small flat head screwdriver in there and lift the clip up.
• The ribbon is held in place by a connector on the logic board (see next step.)
• The black latch needs to be flipped to the up position as shown above and then the cable can be easily removed. If you’re holding it like shown flip the latch towards your thumb.

6
Step Six
Extra image of ClickWheel Connector referenced above

7
Step Seven
Removing the LCD
• The LCD is removed in the same way as the ClickWheel. Be sure not to damage the black clips.
• The black clips are a bit harder to snap back into place than they are to snap up, so we recommend using a flat tool so as to not put too much pressure on any one point of the black clip.

8
Step Eight
LCD is Now Free

9
Step Nine
Work in reverse order to install the necessary part you need.

How to Move Files From an iPod to a Computer

Introduction
iPods are extremely popular MP3 players. They are well known for their easy and low maintenance file storage capabilities. Moving files from an iPod to a computer, however, is a different matter altogether. With earlier generations of iPods, transporting files off of the device to another location is an action that has been met with difficulty. Follow these steps to move files from an iPod to a computer.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps

1
Step One
Connect your iPod to your computer. To do this, use the same cord that you would use when writing files to your iPod. The cord needed for this step depends largely on the generation of iPod you own. Earlier models utilized a special FireWire cord, while later generations have incorporated USB and more widely compatible connection formats.

2
Step Two
Locate the “Control Panel.” On your computer’s “Start” menu, find the “Control Panel” and open it. In the Control Panel screen double click on the icon for “Portable Media Devices.” This will open a screen that will allow you to access your iPod. Double click the icon for your iPod.

3
Step Three
Locate the “Tools” menu. Once you have double clicked on your iPod’s icon, click on the word “Tools” at the top of the screen. A list of options will appear. Click on the words “Show Hidden Files.” This should make the files on your iPod’s hard drive appear.

4
Step Four
Find your music. In the midst of all of the files and folders that have appeared on your screen, you will eventually find the location of your stored music files. To find these files click on the folder for “iPod Control,” and once inside, click on the folder labeled “Music.”

5
Step Five
“Copy” and “Paste.” Now that you have found your stored music files, you can simply copy and paste them into any folder that you wish on your computer’s hard drive. If you are unable to access the copy function, simply highlight the music you wish to transfer and drag it into another folder.

6
Step Six
Install iTunes. The music files that you transfer from your iPod to your PC will usually be irritatingly unorganized. You will need to have iTunes installed on your PC to easily organize them back into the same format you had on your iPod.

Overall Tips & Warnings
If you have not yet purchased your iPod, make sure that you get a newer model. The first generations had many complications ranging from suspiciously erratic battery life to poor connectivity/compatibility.
If you have a choice between FireWire and USB, go with USB. USB is much more compatible with any form of PC, laptop, Pocket PC and handheld device.
The ability to copy and past entire libraries of music files is yet another opportunity for people to partake in illegal sharing of copyrighted materials. This is a form of piracy and remains illegal in the United States.
