Some Retro and Nature In My Mobiles

It’s not hard to see the future of electronics is all about slim and sleek, metal and glass, techno gadget matrix and multimedia. Is there any room for the retro styling’s of yesteryear? And what about nature? Shouldn’t something organic make its way into our hyper-tech designs? Designer Seungchan Lee thinks the CulArt (pronounce Cool Art) concept fulfils both.

Internally you have your typical Smartphone design; touch screen, camera, slim but the physical design differs greatly. First off you’ll notice the wood panelling, you know… to invoke the idea of trees. That’s the nature bit of the design. The included Bluetooth headset/remote uses a series of knobs to control the phone’s most basic functions.

Clearly retro and clearly pre-80’s. Flip the phone around and you’ll find a rocky textured surface which prevents slippage and reminds you of how much you suck at rock climbing. Designer: Seungchan Lee

Tok Tak Plug Plays Music

The Tok Tak is certainly one of the most basic and smallest MP3 player concepts we’ve seen. The entire device looks like a standard audio jack; in fact that’s pretty much what it is. The plug dangles from your earphones when used on the go. People might mistake you for crazy walking around with what looks like ear buds attached to nothing but they’d be wrong.

The Tok Tak also comes with a base station in which you can plug it in to recharge, upload new music, and act as a joystick controller to listen to your turns externally. Designer: Tae-wan Kim

Dual Music Player That Plays Your MP3 Collection & Your CDs

You want to enjoy your audio CDs while travelling but you also have a huge MP3 collection at home that you want to take with you. The ideal solution? DMP, a portable music player that supports CD and MP3 files.

Use the MP3 player as you normally would, hang it around your neck, clip it on your jeans or place it in your pocket. Otherwise open both sides and insert your favourite CD and you got yourself a CD player my friend. Now that’s music to my ears.

Anything Can Be An MP3 Player

The tie clip MP3 player is exactly what is says, a tie clip MP3 player. What’s a tie clip? For shame! A tie clip is a simple clasp or clip used to keep the two dangling ends of a tie together. Sometimes it’s even clipped to the dress shirt underneath so your tie won’t move. Now, throw in a single line LCD, some simple play/stop controls, and a little flash memory and you’ve got yourself a tie clip MP3 player.

You can even use it as a messaging panel, like a “Hello, my name is. . ., ” or casually slip into the Republican convention with “Bush Sucks” flashing for all to see.

Pix-L UMPC: the mini PC for needed the network (concept design)

Pix-L UMPC is a concept of Jean Hong and was designed mainly for which they feel the necessity to connect itself to right Internet before going away to sleep in the morning or to first hour as soon as they are on an aware. Also it presents/displays an alarm-clock and a design that allows to turn the device to be able to use it as much as clock as mini PC.

Still nothing is known if the people of Microsoft will begin with the creation of this device in a near time but he would be very interesting to be able to have this type of gadgets with us.

VLC Media Player 0.8.6e

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen. Version 0.8.6e is a bug fixing release.

When it comes to video files, nothing is ever as easy as it should be. Thankfully, VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution for the file-format problem. The program supports playback of OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, DVD, and a whole slew of other file types. In addition, it also can function as a streaming media server. Because of its open-source foundation, VLC Media Player evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently.

Though the interface varies from platform to platform, the sparseness of the Windows version leaves plenty to be desired. The skinned mode perks things up slightly, but the program seems to suffer from unpredictable behavior when skinned. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratching Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.

GOM Media Player 2.1.9.3753

GOM Player is a free multimedia player with popular video and audio codecs built-in. GOM Player supports file formats such as AVI, DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF. Users don't have to install codecs separately. GOM Player is capable of playing incomplete or damaged AVI files by skipping the damaged frames. It can also play locked or partially downloaded files. Its other features include drag-and-drop support, HTTP streaming, editable skins, subtitling, overlay mixer, key remapping, enhanced filter rendering, real-time index rebuilding for AVI files and unicode support among others.

Version 2.1.9.3753 fixes the problem with video/audio sync for certain MKV files.

As various media players jockey for position to become your default setting for music and video streams, GOM Media Player's support for a wide range of file formats has helped it stand out as a firm favorite.

Supported formats include DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF, AVI, and MOV, as are common codecs like FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, and H263. A pop-out playlist can save and organize your various media files, though the limited sort modes--two--hardly makes it a champ.

More impressive are the customizable settings on the control panel. Here you can adjust a video's image brightness, hue, and saturation. There's no preview window, and changes occur as the video runs, so unless you care for a rousing session of trial and error, be sure to tweak the settings after clicking "play." There's also a built-in screen-capture feature that includes zooming and panning, customizable themes, hot keys, and a host of preset and adjustable audio controls.

GOM is weakest when you're looking for help documentation and trying to tweak Save settings, but overall it's a very strong player worth at least a supporting role in your video-watching habits, if not the lead.

BearFlix 1.1.6.1

BearFlix is the fastest video download application on the Web offering access to millions of video titles, all free. BearFlix is powered by the same engine as BearShare, but optimized from the ground up for video download. BearFlix is 100% clean, with no adware, no spyware, no viruses, no trojans. Just pure video downloads. Share BearFlix with your friends.

BearFlix roars out of the cave with swarming, hashing, fast downloads and a video player, but hibernates when confronted with proxies.

BearFlix almost configures itself, and its toolbar and icon interface is geared toward novices. (Configuration options help advanced users suit the program to taste.) Based on the popular BearShare, and connected to the Gnutella network, this utility is optimized for video files. Simply enter a search term, and find files immediately. As with all P2P networks, there's no guarantee the files are available, accurately named, or virus-free. However, BearFlix's file-rating option helps users self-police spam off the network.

BearFlix uses hashing to discover identical files across the network, making file swarming easy without user intervention. We found that files downloaded very quickly, but BearFlix took slightly more system memory than Firefox 2. However, it includes a video player to help forestall memory creep. This freeware version includes a banner ad, and download speeds are slightly crippled. Advanced users will note configuring BearFlix is easy but will be disappointed the program lacks proxy server support.

Novice peer-to-peer users will find BearFlix a great entry-level P2P program, but most users will prefer an application geared to files of all types.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is delayed until the 2009

It seems that finally the XPERIA X1 remains for second half of the year, not since had been rumoured, that would happen at the beginning of the 2009. But marks to speak them of a period of time as fourth or half of the year means to send to the product 10 days before the term finishes.

It knew that something thus had to happen, is not possible to be shown a great terminal as it is the XPERIA X1 and to hope that the terms are fulfilled. Usually it happens with almost all the terminals that usually change the present line of products of any mark, the XPERIA X1 is what iPhone has been for Apple, a course change, or that we hoped.

The bad news are that seeing the table of the launchings of the terminals of Sony Ericsson, the date of the X1 is of the 10 of February of 2009, that is to say, that until within a year will not be able to be seen in any side that is not in Internet or the great fairs.

Rock Lobster

Anytime I can get one of the best lyrics from the B52’s into a blog post, I’m there. I’m not just pulling this out of thin air tho. This multimedia device is called the Lobster and if you squint really hard, the segmented pieces sorta look like a lobster’s tail.

It’s composed of an LCD screen that acts as a base for a multitude of media modules. By snapping those modules on, you further extend the Lobster’s features. The cool thing about the segmented design is it makes a perfect arm band, that is if you add enough modules. Sneaky huh? Designer: Danilo Mangini

Coby tries to think out of a familiar box

If all personal media players are dominated by the largest touch screen they can handle--a la the iPhone and Touch--how much room is left for designs that distinguish them from the rest of the pack? Take the latest to join the fray, for example: Coby's MP-835.

As Chip Chick notes, it seemed like an obvious Touch competitor, while fellow Craver Donald Bell thought it looked a lot like the Samsung YP-P2. It's certainly clean enough, but the specs aren't anything to crow about--a 3-inch touch LCD, 2GB or 4GB internal storage, and the usual audio and video support.

As far as the design goes, it's hard to blame Coby for not standing apart. The way things are going, media players may all end up looking like the back of a point-and-shoot camera. Which, in turn, may become a standard part of the phone anyway. And that brings us full circle, back to the iPhone. Think of it as a gadget version of an Escher illustration.

Best Media Player - iRiver Media Players [CES 2008]

Scale is everything: We knew iriver's Wing touchscreen UMPC was seriously compact, but didn't know just how small it was. It's still a complete prototype. You're looking at dumb plastic, and the top half even sorta fell out. But we convinced them to pull it out of the glass case so we could do a quick sizemodo. We just hope it actually comes out at this size.
