VLC Media Player 0.8.6e

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen. Version 0.8.6e is a bug fixing release.

When it comes to video files, nothing is ever as easy as it should be. Thankfully, VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution for the file-format problem. The program supports playback of OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, DVD, and a whole slew of other file types. In addition, it also can function as a streaming media server. Because of its open-source foundation, VLC Media Player evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently.

Though the interface varies from platform to platform, the sparseness of the Windows version leaves plenty to be desired. The skinned mode perks things up slightly, but the program seems to suffer from unpredictable behavior when skinned. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratching Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.

GOM Media Player 2.1.9.3753

GOM Player is a free multimedia player with popular video and audio codecs built-in. GOM Player supports file formats such as AVI, DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF. Users don't have to install codecs separately. GOM Player is capable of playing incomplete or damaged AVI files by skipping the damaged frames. It can also play locked or partially downloaded files. Its other features include drag-and-drop support, HTTP streaming, editable skins, subtitling, overlay mixer, key remapping, enhanced filter rendering, real-time index rebuilding for AVI files and unicode support among others.

Version 2.1.9.3753 fixes the problem with video/audio sync for certain MKV files.

As various media players jockey for position to become your default setting for music and video streams, GOM Media Player's support for a wide range of file formats has helped it stand out as a firm favorite.

Supported formats include DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF, AVI, and MOV, as are common codecs like FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, and H263. A pop-out playlist can save and organize your various media files, though the limited sort modes--two--hardly makes it a champ.

More impressive are the customizable settings on the control panel. Here you can adjust a video's image brightness, hue, and saturation. There's no preview window, and changes occur as the video runs, so unless you care for a rousing session of trial and error, be sure to tweak the settings after clicking "play." There's also a built-in screen-capture feature that includes zooming and panning, customizable themes, hot keys, and a host of preset and adjustable audio controls.

GOM is weakest when you're looking for help documentation and trying to tweak Save settings, but overall it's a very strong player worth at least a supporting role in your video-watching habits, if not the lead.

BearFlix 1.1.6.1

BearFlix is the fastest video download application on the Web offering access to millions of video titles, all free. BearFlix is powered by the same engine as BearShare, but optimized from the ground up for video download. BearFlix is 100% clean, with no adware, no spyware, no viruses, no trojans. Just pure video downloads. Share BearFlix with your friends.

BearFlix roars out of the cave with swarming, hashing, fast downloads and a video player, but hibernates when confronted with proxies.

BearFlix almost configures itself, and its toolbar and icon interface is geared toward novices. (Configuration options help advanced users suit the program to taste.) Based on the popular BearShare, and connected to the Gnutella network, this utility is optimized for video files. Simply enter a search term, and find files immediately. As with all P2P networks, there's no guarantee the files are available, accurately named, or virus-free. However, BearFlix's file-rating option helps users self-police spam off the network.

BearFlix uses hashing to discover identical files across the network, making file swarming easy without user intervention. We found that files downloaded very quickly, but BearFlix took slightly more system memory than Firefox 2. However, it includes a video player to help forestall memory creep. This freeware version includes a banner ad, and download speeds are slightly crippled. Advanced users will note configuring BearFlix is easy but will be disappointed the program lacks proxy server support.

Novice peer-to-peer users will find BearFlix a great entry-level P2P program, but most users will prefer an application geared to files of all types.

Apple presents/displays the SDK for iPhone (in June available), games, compatibility with MS Exchange and continues iPod Touch

In the end it has not been for as much the presentation of the SDK for iPhone, after the always impressive numbers of sales of iPhone has arrived the important thing, data of the SDK.

First that has happened it is that Phil Schiller announced the license of ActiveSync to be able to integrate MS Exchange with iPhone and that all the applications will work without problems from a Exchange servant.

Evidently the main announcement has turned out to be the SDK for iPhone, the same one that uses in Apple to create their applications. Some characteristics of this SDK are that Integra iPhone Simulator, a simulator that will allow you to prove any application in your Mac with no need to install it in iPhone.

Without a doubt, the application more interesting than has shown is AIM for iPhone, complete a IM by this protocol that will allow to connect you to accounts AIM and iChat.

Steve Jobs presented/displayed, like colophon to afternoon, App Store, with which you will be able to directly buy applications from your iPhone.

When we see all this? Then the launching is planned for June, in version 2,0 of firmware of the telephone, but today same the developers will be able to have a beta version to begin to program, that if, if you want developer of these applications and to put them under App Store on sale, you will have to pay a license of $99.

Users of iPod Touch. We can say that Apple we have put it doubled, pardon the language, but there is name no to describe that Apple forces to pay to you (again) by these characteristics, removed of the press note:

For Third party applications created the iPhone will also run on the iPod touch, and iPod touch users will be required to purchase to software update to run these applications.

That your God blesses to hackers that they develop applications of jailbreak, they will inherit the Earth!
